Surface dressing programme boosts road safety

Cllr Nick BennettROADS in East Sussex will get a summer makeover as a major resurfacing programme gets underway across the county.

East Sussex Highways will carry out surface dressing of 26 miles of road – roughly the distance from Dover to Calais – during the programme, which is due to begin on Monday, June 25 2018.

Roads to get a new lease of life include those in Battle, Bexhill, Eastbourne, Falmer, Forest Row, Hartfield, Horam, Rotherfield, Ticehurst and Wadhurst.

Surface dressing, in which roads are coated with hot tar and chippings, improves safety by providing more grip and can extend the life of the carriageway by up to 10 years.

Affected roads will be closed to traffic with signed diversion routes in place during the work, the schedule of which is subject to change depending on weather.

Cllr Nick Bennett, East Sussex County Council lead member for transport and environment, said: “Surface dressing allows us to protect roads from frost and water damage which can lead to potholes.

“This is a relatively straightforward and cost-effective way of targeting roads most at risk of wear and tear, preventing serious deterioration and the need for more costly reconstruction work.

“While there may be some disruption, we’d ask residents to bear with us while we carry out this programme, which allows us to create a smoother, safer road surface and to extend the life of the road.”

The programme will see 26 sections of road surfaced over 11 days, covering an area of 238,000 sq m – roughly equivalent to 36 football pitches.

The surface dressing is just part of the county council’s £15 million maintenance programme of roads across East Sussex.

The full surface dressing programme can be viewed on the East Sussex Highways website at www.eastsussexhighways.com/surface-dressing

The full provisional surface dressing programme is below. Dates may change due to road space availability and unsuitable weather conditions. Confirmed dates will be displayed on the East Sussex Highways website around 48 hours before work begins.
