Timely refresh of our health and wellbeing strategy

Healthy Lives, Healthy People is our health and wellbeing strategy for the 500,000+ people who live in East Sussex. It sets out our plans for improving health, reducing health inequalities, and integrating care for the population of the county.

The strategy has recently been refreshed to reflect our current priorities, the learning from the pandemic, and more recent national plans and strategies. Shared priorities are covered for things like integrated services, children and young people, mental health, community, urgent care, and planned care.

Updating the strategy will help us to restore our system in a sustainable way after the pandemic and plan for the future. Examples of current developments include:

  • Continuing to prioritise investment in children and young people’s mental health and wellbeing services.
  • Enabling people to get help from mental health practitioners in primary care settings like GP surgeries and developing an action plan to support better mental health in the population.
  • Planning for future arrangements to provide short term services and support so that people can be discharged to their own home (where appropriate) or another community setting and spend less time in hospital when they no longer need acute care.
  • Exploring our model for our primary, community health and social care, key voluntary sector teams and others, to bring together a more joined up offer of care and support and prevention-based services in local areas and communities.
  • Focussing on respiratory services and pathways to ensure people are supported when waiting for appointments and treatment, reduce inequalities and improve integration.
  • Finalising proposals for improving cardiology and ophthalmology services following the public consultations, alongside continuing work to progress the development of a modern facility to support mental health inpatients as part of the national eradicating dormitories programme.

Health and wellbeing for all is not just about services though. It is improved by access to good jobs, transport, housing and green space, opportunities for lifelong learning, exercise, good nutrition and supportive networks and relationships between people and within communities. The strategy recognises this and has a clear focus on these wider determinants of health, and our key partnership strategies and plans that support this.

The strategy will guide our work over the coming years, so do have a read if you want to find out more about the shared priorities for health and care partners in East Sussex.

On 1 July a new statutory NHS Integrated Care Board (ICB) known as NHS Sussex took over from the three NHS Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs). NHS Sussex is responsible for agreeing the strategic priorities and resource allocation for all NHS organisations in Sussex, taking on the commissioning functions previously carried out by CCGs.

The roles of our East Sussex Health and Care Partnership and Health and Wellbeing Board (HWB) are pivotal in the new arrangements, so a refresh of the ‘Healthy People, Healthy Lives’ strategy which sets out the shared priorities for our population is timely.  NHS Sussex is a key member of our East Sussex Partnership and HWB, and our work together will enable us to continue to build on our progress to improve health, reduce health inequalities and ensure a joined-up offer of care for our population.
