THE FINAL phase of the Queensway Gateway Road is now expected to be completed in September.

East Sussex County Council and its contractor Balfour Beatty Living Places are delivering the last stage of the project which links Queensway with the A21 Sedlescombe Road North.

The work was due to be completed at the end of this month, but owing to unforeseen circumstances the road is now scheduled to open to the public in September.

Complex work to relocate the water main took longer than expected but with this work now finished our contractor can complete construction of the new filter lane onto the A21 before resurfacing the junction.

Following this, high friction surfacing and road markings can be applied to the carriageway and traffic signals installed to prepare the road for opening.

Overnight closures on the A21 Sedlescombe North will be in place from 8pm to 6am, seven days a week to allow this work, which cannot be completed during the day, to take place.

To progress the final elements as quickly as possible and to allow other work to continue throughout the day, temporary traffic signals will also remain in place during the day, with manual operation at peak times between 7am and 7pm to help with traffic flow.

A spokesperson for East Sussex County Council said: “We are very sorry for the delay to the opening of the Queensway Gateway Road, and appreciate the frustration the ongoing works are causing to drivers and the local community.

“We are working as quickly as possible to complete the last phase of what is a major infrastructure project and expect the road to be open to traffic only a few weeks later than originally planned.”

The opening of the Queensway Gateway Road will improve traffic flow and transport links between Bexhill and Hastings as well as unlock land for much-needed employment space.

A period of monitoring will follow the opening of the road to ensure traffic is flowing smoothly.
