BUSINESSES across East Sussex are opening their doors to students to give them an insight into the world of work.

More than 20 businesses have signed up to East Sussex County Council’s annual Open Doors scheme, aimed at giving young people real-life experience of the workplace and the chance to learn about possible career paths.

This year the scheme, supported by East Sussex Careers Hub, will run from November until June 2023 to ensure that as many Year 7 to Year 13 students as possible can benefit.

Cllr Bob Standley, East Sussex County Council’s lead member for education and inclusion, special educational needs and disability, said: “We are grateful to the businesses taking part this year.  Open Doors is extremely valuable to young people who are starting to think about the careers they wish to pursue.

“The more knowledge and experience of business, the better chance young people have to be successful in their future educational and professional careers.”

A wide variety of industries will be represented in this year including engineering, accountancy, construction, manufacturing and hospitality.  There will also be the opportunity for students to visit a court, museums and galleries, a sports charity and the National Horseracing College in Plumpton.

Visiting students get the opportunity to tour buildings, meet different employees and learn about the employability skills and available career opportunities.

Cllr Rupert Simmons, lead member for economy, added: “As well as the huge benefit to students, the Open Doors scheme helps businesses inspire and encourage their future workforce and give them a clear idea of the qualifications and experience they will need to succeed in an industry.”
