Eastbourne road enhancements to start ahead of busy summer
IMPROVEMENTS to a town centre road in Eastbourne will begin this weekend to avoid major disruption during the busy summer season.
The strengthening and resurfacing work planned for Devonshire Place will begin on Sunday, May 31 and is due for completion on Friday, June 5 - operating 24 hours a day.
The improvements to the road surface - required due to the impact of winter weather - will focus on the area between Grand Parade and the Memorial Roundabout and aim to make journeys smoother and safer.
A spokesperson for East Sussex Highways said: “Eastbourne welcomes thousands of visitors each summer, and we know how important it is to keep the town moving during this busy period. This is why the work has been planned carefully and scheduled to be completed ahead of the main tourist season.”
Devonshire Place will be closed to through traffic in phases, with clearly signed diversion routes in place in order that resurfacing as well as ironwork adjustments and new road markings can be carried out safely.
The spokesperson added: “We appreciate that this may cause some disruption and we thank residents, business-owners and visitors to the area for their patience while we complete these improvements. Our teams will be on site to help manage access wherever possible for residents and businesses.”
Local bus operators have been informed of the work and services are currently being diverted due to the condition of the road. Once work is complete public transport services will return to the area.
The work is scheduled to start after the 999 event has finished on Sunday (999 Emergency Services Display - Visit Eastbourne).
