Embankment work to start next month
WORK to stabilise the western embankment along a section of the A21 will take place next month.
With significant rainfall in the winter and spring and hot, dry summers spells causing ground movement, the planned remedial work will stabilise the embankment and protect against further issues.
Drainage measures will also be installed at the top of the embankment to better manage surface and groundwater to reduce the risk of future issues.
Work will take place across four phases
- Monday, October 5 to Friday, October 16 - Overnight work will take place at the Whitworth Road junction of Sedlescombe Road North between 8pm and 6am. Temporary traffic lights will be in operation on Whitworth Road and the A21 during working hours.
- Monday, October 19 to Wednesday, October 21 - Daytime drainage work will be carried out. No traffic management will be needed during this phase to minimise disruption and as the work will be carried out on top of the embankment without the need for excavation.
- Thursday, October 22 to Friday, October 23: Work will take place during both the day and overnight. Temporary traffic lights will be in operation overnight between 8pm and 6am.
- Monday, October 26 to Friday, October 30 - Final overnight works will be completed between 8pm and 6am, with temporary traffic lights in operation during working hours.
A section of Junction Road will be fenced off while the work is carried out but can still be accessed by pedestrians and cyclists.
An East Sussex Highways spokesperson said: “As previously announced, we need to carry out this work to protect the adjacent highway but will keep disruption to a minimum by carrying out the majority of the work overnight without needing to fully close the road.”
