New scheme gives Victoria Place a fresh look
WITH 25,000 paving slabs laid, 1,700 metres of road resurfaced and almost a mile of granite kerbs and channels installed, the latest phase of a town centre improvement scheme is nearing completion.
Over the past ten months, Victoria Place has been transformed into a pedestrianised space designed to improve the public space, increase visitor numbers and help local businesses.
As part of the Eastbourne Town Centre Movement and Access Package and with Levelling Up funding of £4.74million, East Sussex County Council and Eastbourne Borough Council worked together on the £5.45million improvement scheme in Terminus Road between Seaside Road and Grand Parade.
This week representatives from the two councils, along with East Sussex Highways, and contractors Octavius met to view the work.
Cllr Claire Dowling, East Sussex County Council’s lead member for environment and transport said: “It’s great to see the plans come to life and visitors to the town enjoying the safer, healthier and thriving town centre, which supports our efforts to reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality.
“This is an important part of the town centre improvement scheme as it will enhance accessibility and give priority to those walking, using wheelchairs and other mobility aids, as well as improving connections between the town centre and the seafront.”
With the paving area now complete, additional items will be added in the coming months including seating, planting and a new piece of artwork commissioned by the Towner Gallery.
Cllr Dowling added: “We know that work on schemes of this size can cause disruption and would like to thank businesses and residents for their patience. Hopefully they can begin to benefit from the work that has been done.”
Ends.
