Update: Shipping containers and debris on the coast of East Sussex

Work continues to clear the East Sussex coastline of the remains of shipping containers and debris following containers going overboard from two cargo ships in recent weeks.

Over the last week East Sussex councils have worked with other agencies and volunteers and have cleared large amounts of debris including organic materials, metals, plastics and container parts. All parties will continue to work with relevant agencies to arrange for the safe removal and disposal of the debris.

Members of the public are reminded to be cautious when visiting the coastline, to not consume any food products washing up on the beach and to keep dogs on leads to prevent them from eating anything that may make them unwell.

All councils working on the clean up operation are liaising with the shipping company’s insurers to ensure the cost of the clean up can be recovered.

How to report new debris

Any sightings of shipping containers at sea should be reported to HM Coastguard on 0344 382 0560

Any containers, or large parts of containers on the shoreline should be reported directly to contractor Adler and Allen on 0800 592 827 providing the location using what3words if possible.
