Road safety work to be carried out in Hastings
PEDESTRIANS are set to benefit from a raft of safety improvements on a busy Hastings road.
Work to upgrade existing pedestrian crossings, build a new crossing point in St Helens Road and improve the junction of St Helens Road, Bethune Way and Elphinstone Road for pedestrians, is due to start at the end of April.
The scheme, funded by the Government’s Safer Roads Fund (SRF), also includes a new high friction surface by an existing zebra crossing and changes to the roundabout at the junction of Bethune Way.
Cllr Claire Dowling, East Sussex County Council’s lead member for transport and environment, said: “Its proximity to Alexandra Park makes St Helens Road a popular pedestrian route and I am pleased that we are able to make these improvements. The widening of crossing points will make it safer and easier for wheelchair and mobility scooters to use, as well as people with prams and pushchairs.
“With limited funds for road safety improvements, the council is restricted with the schemes it can take forward so I am delighted that part of the A2101 in Hastings was selected by the Department of Transport to benefit from the Government’s Safer Roads Fund.”
The work is expected to last 12 weeks with traffic management in place, including overnight road closures for the resurfacing work. Details will be shared at Welcome to East Sussex Highways – live.eastsussexhighways.com when confirmed.
East Sussex County Council was awarded £875,000 funding for improvements at 15 locations along the A2101 from the Government’s Safer Roads Fund. The funding is designed to address safety on roads it has identified based on risk through analysis by the Road Safety Foundation.
The allocation criteria are different to that used by the county council for prioritising its annual road safety programme, and the money can only be used for specific targeted measures on the roads identified by the Government.
Ends.
