Chairman enjoys a taste of France with youth forum
EAST Sussex County Council’s Chairman joined young people from Newhaven to enjoy a taste of the continent.
Sussex Community Development Association invited Cllr Roy Galley join the Newhaven Youth Forum’s French evening based around the town’s links with Dieppe.
Cllr Galley was able to share some thoughts on his visits to Dieppe representing the county, sample French food and see young people make their own croissants at the youth centre on Denton Island.
“They are a lively, confident and articulate group of young people and were focussed on providing stimulating social activities and encouraging other teenagers to get off their screens and join them,” Cllr Galley said. “My visit gave me great faith in the young people of Newhaven. They are a vibrant crowd, and I hope many more will join them.”
Bonnie Ashley , Chair of Newhaven Young People's Forum thanked Cllr Galley for his visit to the youth café at Denton Island. She said: “We hope Cllr Galley managed to get a good feel of what we hope to achieve as a youth forum. We also really appreciated the time he took to listen to our views and plans for the future. We really hope he can visit the cafe again soon, so he can see more of the activities that we are planning.”
Later in the week the Chairman returned to Newhaven to understand the work Sussex Community Development Association are doing to support residents and visit their Community Supermarket.
The Association does a huge amount of work from supporting environmental initiatives to helping families with young children to helping tackle loneliness and isolation, promoting employability, and offering a whole range of community advice.
The Community Supermarket offers a range of food with free access for six weeks and a small charge to continue to use it.
Cllr Galley said: “My visit to the Community Supermarket gave me a greater understanding of the very real problems many have with our cost of living crisis. Higher living costs affect us all but for some people they are struggling after paying the rent and the heating bills. The work of Sussex Community Development Association is very important in helping them cope and thrive “.
