Work to improve bus services in Newhaven begins
WORK is starting on a scheme designed to support more reliable and efficient bus services in Newhaven.
Improvements to a section of the bus route running along The Drove and Seaford Road will be carried out in three phases in a bid to minimise disruption.
The work is funded by the Bus Service Improvement Plan funding from Department for Transport and will help to improve the consistency of bus services, tackle congestion and improve the offer of bus services serving the area.
Cllr Peter Griffith, East Sussex County Council’s lead member for transport and environment, said: “These measures will help improve the bus network in the area, providing a more reliable service for residents, reduce journey times and delays and, as a result, encourage a more sustainable alternative to car use.
“The Newhaven Denton Corner scheme will also improvement pedestrian and cyclist safety and improve visibility for road users and pedestrians.”
The first phase of the project will begin on Tuesday, September 1 and involves improvements in the Seaford Road, Mount Road and Avis Road areas.
Traffic management will be in place whilst the new bus lane is constructed, new bus stops installed and improvements made to traffic signals.
Once phase 2 is complete work will begin on completing the remaining bus lane improvements and working on the surrounding space.
The final stage of the project will require the temporary closure of the Mount Road bus loop to allow work to be completed on road connections, traffic signals, footways, cycle facilities and landscaping.
Traffic management and diversion routes will be in place throughout the work with some overnight road closures needed for resurfacing work. Details of road closures will be publicised once confirmed. The measures at Newhaven Denton Corner form part of a wider package of transport investment designed give people greater confidence to choose the bus for everyday journeys.
The BSIP programme is funded by the Department for Transport (DfT) awarded specifically for the delivery of bus service improvements.
