East Sussex County Council’s fleet of gritters has already been in action several times this winter and is on standby should the weather turn cold over the festive period.
And there are 10,000 tonnes of salt in the depots ready to treat the county’s roads.
But if East Sussex is hit with very severe weather, residents and businesses are being reminded that it is perfectly acceptable for them to clear snow and ice from pavements themselves.
Government guidance says it is unlikely anyone will be sued or held responsible if someone is injured on a path or pavement if it has been cleared carefully:
Councillor Carl Maynard, lead cabinet member for Transport and Environment, said: “We know people are sometimes cautious about clearing snow and ice for fear of being sued, but it’s really important people do work together to make sure everyone stays safe if we get severe or snowy weather.
“Others will say that it is the job of the Council to clear snow and ice, but whilst we focus on clearing and salting the main roads and pedestrian areas, you could help us by clearing snow from the pavements in front of your property or business. Please act in a neighbourly way by clearing snow and ice from pavements, pathways and other public spaces.”
