WORK has been completed on a highways scheme aimed at improving conditions for pedestrians in Hastings Old Town.

The East Sussex County Council scheme in High Street finished on schedule and has been welcomed by residents and local traders.

The project saw a new pavement built between George Street and Swan Terrace, footways widened and repaved around the junction of High Street and the A259 and new paving between West Street and George Street.

The work was part of a package of measures for High Street approved in 2014 following a public consultation.

Cllr Carl Maynard, East Sussex County Council lead member for transport and environment, said: “This project was planned in close consultation with local traders and residents and the feedback we’ve received during and after completion has been overwhelmingly positive.

“The improvements have made it easier for pedestrians to negotiate their way around what is a very busy area and have made the Old Town a more attractive place for residents and visitors.

“I’d like to thank residents and traders for their co-operation and to pay tribute to our contractors, Kier, for their professionalism and high quality of workmanship.

“I’d also like to acknowledge the role played by the late Councillors Jeremy Birch and John Hodges, who were always very supportive of this scheme and what it was doing to improve Hastings.”

The scheme had the backing of the Hastings Old Town Residents Association (HOTRA), which had campaigned for pedestrian improvements to the area.

Dick Edwards, HOTRA chairman, said: “The whole project has been thoughtfully handled from the outset with regular updates and the contractors have been skilled, hard-working and diligent.

“The design and materials are first rate for such a visually sensitive position. The improvement has been overwhelmingly praised. Sincere thanks to all involved.”
