Residents’ views will be used to shape services to be offered at the new Newhaven Library.

East Sussex County Council asked for people’s opinions on what they felt was important for the new facility.

A total of 304 people responded by completing a short survey or submitting their comments on a postcard.

The most important services, according to respondents, were a good choice of books and helpful staff that can provide information on local services, groups and events.

Convenient opening times were also highlighted, particularly during the week and on Saturdays.

Cllr Dowling, the county council’s lead member for community services, said: “These results show what a key role libraries play in the communities of East Sussex not only providing books but also helping local people to find the information they need.

“People’s views will be considered when planning services for the new Library in Newhaven and will be used to inform other work that is being undertaken across the library and information service.”

He added: “The new library at Newhaven is a further example of the county council’s multi-million pound investment in libraries across East Sussex. The council is also providing a new library and adult social care development in Seaford and new library development in Hastings.”

The £1.6 million East Sussex County Council development will see the library move from its existing base to a new, larger site in the former M&Co. premises at 36 High Street.

The new library is one of the schemes being developed with a record £13 million investment in libraries by the county council which has also included a new library and social care development in Seaford and a new library and register office in Hastings.
