THE horrors of a Victorian kitchen and the diets of people living through the world wars will be on the menu at The Keep’s open day this month.
The archive centre is throwing open its doors to the public on Saturday, September 26, and offering special talks, tours and exhibitions between 10am and 3pm.
The theme of this year’s event is food through the ages and will include talks on how food preparation has changed over the past century, and will feature displays including menus, diaries and posters detailing popular recipes of the First and Second World Wars and beyond.
Visitors to the centre in Woollards Way, Moulsecoomb, are invited to bring in their favourite family recipes that have been handed down through the generations to be included in a collection of recipes to be stored at the Keep.
Younger visitors can find out why ancient food remains are so important to archaeologists and can go home with a Roman purse which they create themselves.
No prior booking is necessary and all talks and tours can be booked at reception on the day. More information about the event and to get to The Keep can be found at www.thekeep.info/events
The Keep holds archives from East Sussex Record Office, the Royal Pavilion & Museums, Brighton & Hove Local History Collections and the University of Sussex Special Collections.
