MORE than 300 pairs of non-slip slippers were handed out during successful fall-prevention events.
Hundreds of people attending the East Sussex County Council-organised events in Hastings and Bexhill, which have some of the highest rates of hospital admissions for falls in the country.
Those attending were also given tailored advice on how to prevent falls by improving their strength and balance.
Cllr Carl Maynard, the county council’s lead member for adult social care and health, said: “It was great to see so many people taking advantage of the help and advice on offer.
“Hopefully, by attending the event and taking the advice on board, we will be able to help our older population live healthy and independent lives for longer.”
The East Sussex County Council’s Public Health team initiative brought together local charities, businesses and healthcare professionals giving tips and sharing information about local activities and exercise groups.
Darrell Gale, East Sussex County Council’s Director of Public Health said: “We’ve received some great feedback from the events and were pleased to see so many people attending.
“Although the risk increases with age, falling is not an inevitable part of growing older. Strength and balance exercises done two or more times a week can make a real difference.”
