Advice and support if you’re self-isolating or shielding

If you need extra help to get food, medicines or essentials during the coronavirus pandemic, or you are lonely and isolated, there is support available.

You may need extra help for a range of reasons, for example if you’re self-isolating with COVID-19 symptoms, following shielding guidance, avoiding public places because you’re at higher risk, or quarantining before a medical procedure.

In the first instance, you’re encouraged to ask trusted family, friends and neighbours if they can help. If you don’t have anyone you trust living nearby, there is community support available.

You can find out about services that can help with specific issues and what to do if you can’t get food, medicines, or are lonely and isolated on the community support web pages: eastsussex.gov.uk/covidsupport.

This includes how to ask for help from NHS Volunteer Responders, and how to get in touch with the five community hubs in East Sussex. Anyone who feels they need extra support to cope during the pandemic and has no other way to get help can use a community hub. 

If you’re identified as clinically extremely vulnerable (CEV) to coronavirus you are currently being advised to shield. Visit our website for advice and support if you’re in the shielded group: eastsussex.gov.uk/CEV.

Have you needed help or advice during the pandemic? Have you helped someone else? Opportunity to tell East Sussex County Council about your experiences

East Sussex County Council want to improve how we share information about adult social care and coronavirus with local people. To help us do this,  we’ve asked an organisation called Activmob to speak to 50 people in East Sussex that have needed help during the coronavirus pandemic, or who have helped someone else like a family member, neighbour or friend. We’d particularly like to hear from men, older people, and people from an ethnic minority background.

We want to know: what do you know, or think, about social care in East Sussex? Are you getting the information and help you need during the pandemic? Have you had any problems getting information? What’s working well, or needs to improve?

You don’t need to have any experience or knowledge of adult social care to take part.

If you take part, the conversations will last about 30-40 minutes by phone, or by video call if you prefer. All the conversations are anonymous, unless we are worried that you or someone else is at risk of harm. You’ll be told at the time if this is the case.

It’s possible not everyone who gets in touch will take part as there are a maximum of 50 interviews.

COVID-19 vaccination scam alert

We are aware that some people are receiving fraudulent calls and text messages offering the COVID-19 vaccination. In some cases, people are asked to press a number on their keypad or to send a text message to confirm they wish to receive the vaccine. Doing so is likely to result in a charge being applied to their phone bill. In other cases, callers are offering the vaccine for a fee or asking for bank details.

People are warned to be alert to these scams.

The vaccine is only available from the NHS and the NHS will contact you when it is your turn. At present, appointments are only being offered to the public over 80 years old.

The NHS will:

NEVER ask you to press a button on your keypad or send a text to confirm you want the vaccine.
NEVER ask for payment or for your bank details.

If you receive a call you believe to be fraudulent, hang up. If you believe you have been the victim of fraud or identity theft you should report this directly to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040. Where the victim is vulnerable, report it to Sussex Police online or by calling 101.

Your invitation to race inequality webinars

In response to the disproportionate impact of Covid-19 on people from ethnic minority backgrounds, Diversity Resource International and Sussex Health and Care Partnership are co-designing and delivering a series of four webinars. The sessions aim to encourage discussion around tackling inequalities in health, social care, employment and education.

The webinars are:

  • Wednesday 28 October, 6pm – 8pm: Access to health and social care, plus celebrating Black History Month
  • Thursday 3 December, 6pm – 8pm: Employment opportunities and promotion
  • Wednesday 13 January, 6pm – 8pm: Access to mental health and wellbeing
  • Thursday 25 February, 6pm – 8pm: Black Lives Matter in education

Listen to life stories from Sussex-based communities and inspirational keynote speakers. Speak directly to senior health, social care and education professionals, and be inspired by creative and artistic celebrations from prominent poets and young authors.

Take part in the Big Debate

The NHS and local authorities in Sussex would like to know about your experiences of health and care during the Covid-19 pandemic, so that we can improve the way services are provided in the future. Over the last few months we’ve been asking for your views on a range of topics as part of the Big Health and Care (Socially Distanced) Conversation. Next, in the ‘Big Debate’, we’re talking about:

Delayed care: Have you been affected by delays to your care, either because your appointment or treatment was delayed or postponed or because you decided to wait until the pandemic had eased before having your treatment or appointment? Visit the website to tell us about your experiences and any decisions or changes you have made as a result.

Wellbeing: Since the lockdown period due to Covid-19 began, people have made many changes to their lives and what they saw as “normal”. We would like to know more about the changes you made due to Covid-19, whether you think they are good for your wellbeing or not.

  • What have you stopped doing since the start of lockdown? (for example, you might have stopped travelling to work, smoking, or stopped eating healthily due to changing your routine)
  • What have you started doing since the start of lockdown? (For example, you might have started taking daily exercise, reading more, or eating more chocolate!)

Join the NHS Volunteer Responders

The NHS Volunteer Responders scheme is seeking new members in parts of Hastings, Rother, Eastbourne, Wealden, Brighton and Hove.

The volunteers support people who are vulnerable because of COVID-19, and anyone who needs to self-isolate as a result of the virus, through a range of roles:

  • Community Response Volunteer: volunteers to collect and deliver shopping, medication or other essential supplies.
  • Community Response Plus Volunteer: volunteers to collect and deliver shopping, medication or other essential supplies for patients with cognitive impairments and or significant vulnerabilities who are shielding.
  • Patient Transport Volunteer: Providing transport to patients who are medically fit to attend routine medical appointments.
  • NHS Transport Volunteer: volunteers to transport equipment, supplies and/or medication between NHS services and sites. It may also involve assisting pharmacies with medication delivery. This role can also help Local Resilience Networks with transportation and delivery of items such as food parcels.
  • Check In and Chat Volunteer: volunteers to provide telephone support to individuals who are at risk of loneliness.
  • Check In and Chat Plus Volunteer: this is a peer-support role, provided by responders who are shielding themselves. Regular telephone support and a ‘listening ear’ is offered to clients who are also shielding or experiencing challenges as a result of COVID-19

Don’t wait to seek support for your mental health

Health in Mind is the free NHS Talking Therapies service for people experiencing emotional stress and symptoms of anxiety or low mood.

We all have mental health, just as we all have physical health, and struggling from time to time is common and perfectly normal.

Worries about coronavirus, family members or money, as well as the impact of isolation have affected many people in our community and might be having an impact for you.

Hearing from our minority communities

As data is emerging about the disproportionate effect of Covid-19 for our minority communities, a Sussex wide programme has been created with the aims to:

  • better understand the experiences and challenges faced by local minority communities during Covid-19 and
  • use that information to inform and challenge our services to better support and protect you during the pandemic and beyond.

To make a positive impact on our minority communities, we need to understand peoples experiences of health care services within the last two years, how the pandemic has affected people individually and in their household, and consider best ways to support individuals and their community as we learn to live with Covid-19.

We have co-designed a survey with Trust of Developing Communities and partners and have published it on our new interactive website: visit the website to take part. The survey will close on Monday 24th August and the responses will be included in a final report drawing in experiences from people across Sussex with a set of recommendations to have a positive impact on health inequalities.
