A FRESH batch of pictures which bring East Sussex’s wartime past to life has been published.

The images, which feature on East Sussex County Council’s First World War website, overlay photographs taken during the conflict onto a modern image showing the same location.

The pictures, which depict scenes in Hastings and Rother, are the latest in a series created by Kieron Pelling, of Hastings-based Compelling Photography.

Cllr Keith Glazier, East Sussex County Council leader, said: “We’ve had a very positive response to the photographs we’ve published so far, which really seem to have captured people’s imagination.

“Looking at the pictures really gives you a sense that the modern generation of East Sussex residents is walking in the footsteps of those who made such great sacrifices so we can enjoy the lives we live today.”

Anyone who has pictures showing life in the county during the First World War and its immediate aftermath is invited to submit them to be used as part of the project.

Pictures should be those taken between 1914 and 1919, if possible, and should include a feature which is still present today, such as a building, road or landmark.

The pictures appear on the website at www.eastsussexww1.org.uk while people who would like to submit images can do so by emailing info@eastsussexww1.org.uk or writing to Chris Kempshall, East Sussex County Council, County Hall, Lewes, East Sussex BN7 1UE.

Images submitted electronically should be in jpeg format with a resolution of at least 300dpi to ensure it can be viewed clearly on the website.
