EMPLOYERS from across East Sussex will be on hand to inspire and mobilise the future workforce during an innovative virtual careers week.
The Careers East Sussex working group, coordinated by East Sussex County Council, in collaboration with always possible, Culture Shift and Sussex STEM, is hosting eight events between Monday, May 24 and Thursday, May 27.
Focusing on careers in STEM, creative & digital, construction and health & social care, there will be an event in each sector aimed at 14 to 24 year olds, and another for adults who have been made unemployed or are looking to change career.
Each event will feature an infographic video about the sector in East Sussex, a panel made up of individuals passionate about work in their industry and a live Q&A where attendees can further explore how their skills align with opportunities in each sector.
Diana Garnham, Chair of Skills East Sussex, said: “These events offer young people and adults an opportunity to gain an insight into jobs where there are real openings in the county. The timing of these events is ideal, at a time when our economy is starting to open up again and recover.”
Panels will boast local professionals with a wealth of different talents, job roles, backgrounds, and experiences to inspire all ages of East Sussex residents to pursue roles that are ideal for them. Panellists will offer myth busting information, insider tips on getting hired and a local employer perspective on career progression pathways.
Businesses involved in supporting the events include East Sussex Highways, Willmott Dixon, Boutique Modern, Automutatio, HexTransforma Healthcare, Volker Fitzpatrick, Electude, Ovesco, General Dynamics, Southern Water, BarkWeb, Sussex Health & Care Partnership, and many more.
Whether people are interested in a career as a Construction Site Manager, Paramedic, Nurse, Digital Games Designer or Architect, they will be supported with information on training, live vacancies and apprenticeships, as well as being signposted to careers advice from the National Careers Service.
Julian Perrott, BarkWeb, said: “The Careers in Creative & Digital event is a must attend for any East Sussex students who want to learn more about the huge range of careers available. There will be opportunities to discover some of the lesser known career paths – it’s not all websites, video games and coding!
“Personally, I think careers events like this can be truly inspirational and usually open the eyes of the participants to both the variety and excellence of companies within East Sussex giving them something to aspire to and some doors to knock on in a few years’ time.”
Jean-Luc Bressard from Hextransforma Healthcare, said: “The Deep Tech and Med Tech Sectors are witnessing significant growth and investment following the pandemic and the Careers in STEM event series provides an excellent opportunity for employers to engage directly with their future workforce.”
Rachel Groves from Volker Fitzpatrick added: “The Go Construct website lists 300 different job roles in the construction industry. That means opportunities for everyone to do anything ranging from communications to becoming a civil engineer. The pay is good and there are opportunities for you to progress. You don’t need to be super academic, but you do need to have energy, enthusiasm and ambition.”
