New groups will allow readers to enjoy Books Beyond Words

Cllr Chris DowlingTWO new reading groups will give people with learning disabilities the chance to enjoy stories told in pictures.

Books Beyond Words are already available to borrow from East Sussex libraries but will be used by new volunteer-run groups in Uckfield and Seaford libraries from November.

The books, which tell stories in pictures, help people with learning and communication disabilities explore and understand their own experiences. The books can help people learn about life and how to cope with life’s bigger challenges, such as love and relationships, health, death and crime.

Cllr Chris Dowling, East Sussex County Council lead member for community services, said: “These books are a great resource available from our public libraries which ensure that everyone can enjoy the pleasure of books.

“The new reading groups offer a wonderful opportunity for people with learning disabilities to enjoy sharing stories together and I wish them every success.”

People with learning disabilities, and their supporters or family members, can attend one of two taster sessions. The first takes place in Uckfield Library at 10.30am on Monday, October 27, and the second at Seaford Library at 2pm on Thursday, October 30.

Full training will be given to volunteers.
