A MAJOR resurfacing scheme to improve a stretch of the A268 near Rye has been completed on schedule.

East Sussex County Council has resurfaced a two-and-a-half mile section of the road between the A259 at Rye and the B2088 at Beckley.

The £750,000 project, which began on June 1 2015, was carried out in three phases, with the final phase split into two sections to allow access to Rye Medical Centre and Rye Hospital. The road is now fully reopen to traffic.

Cllr Carl Maynard, county council lead member for transport and environment, said: “This was a major scheme which has resulted in a smooth, safe road surface which should last for many years to come.

“As with any project on this scale, there has been some disruption but splitting the final phase into two meant we could ensure people could continue to access the medical centre and hospital

“I’d like to thank motorists and residents for their patience while the work was carried out.

“This is one of the more than 200 schemes we are carrying out as part of a £20 million investment in improving East Sussex roads this financial year.”
