County council staff complete charity Mount Everest stair climb

Four people standing at the bottom of a staircase holding their hands aloftSTAFF from East Sussex County Council’s Children’s Services department have successfully completed a charity stair climb challenge, scaling the equivalent height of Mount Everest by climbing the stairs at work.

Over the course of five hours starting at 7am, colleagues from the Through Care and Separated Children teams collectively climbed over 50,000 steps in aid of the council’s Through Care Fund.

The fund helps provide positive enrichment activities and cultural and educational trips for children in care and care leavers.

The money raised from the event, which took place earlier in November to mark National Care Leavers Month, will go towards the annual Christmas party held each December for children in the county council’s care.

To reach the same height as the world’s highest mountain peak, those taking part each climbed the stairs in St Mary’s House, Eastbourne 86 times.

To date the event has raised over £1,200.

Cllr Bob Bowdler, the lead member for children and families, said: “I offer my huge congratulations to those who gave up their own time (and shoe leather) to take part in this incredible challenge.

“The funds raised through their magnificent effort will ensure the young people in our care can come together this Christmas to have fun and celebrate the festive season.”

Patrick, who took part in the stair climb, said: “Thank you so much to everyone who has donated. We really are so grateful.

“Your generosity will ensure we can put on a wonderful Christmas party for the young people we support.”
