Youngsters make a splash thanks to cash boost

Eastbourne Round Table and 41 Club members at Cuckmere with some of the sit-on kayaks bought with their £1,500 donation to Buzz ActiveYOUNG people with special educational needs have been taking to the water at an East Sussex activity centre – thanks to a donation from local charitable organisations.

Eastbourne Round Table and the associated Eastbourne 41 club donated £1,500 for the purchase of a fleet of easy-to-use ‘sit-on’ kayaks for the Buzz Active centre at Cuckmere.

The open-topped vessels have been used for an accessible paddle sport project enjoyed by youngsters from local special schools, colleges, youth groups and scout and guide groups, as well as other members of the community.

Buzz Active, a not-for-profit organisation run by East Sussex County Council, operates water and land-based group activities to the whole community from three locations in the county.

Richard Wilson, Buzz Active Centre Manager, said: “Sit-on kayaks are more accessible to people who may not have the confidence to use traditional enclosed kayaks.

“The new boats have been enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities, but in particular youngsters with special educational needs and user groups with low confidence.

“We’re really grateful to the Round Table and 41 Club for their donation, which has enabled more people to experience paddle sport, gain confidence and acquire new skills while enjoying the beautiful surroundings of Seven Sisters Country Park.”

Schools and colleges taking part in the scheme have included St Mary’s School & College, Bexhill, New Horizons School, St Leonards, and Headstart School, Ninfield, while local College Central network students have also taken part.

Buzz Active, based at centres in Cuckmere, Eastbourne and Bushy Wood, near Hailsham, operates all year round and offers activities including kayaking and paddle sport, sailing, windsurfing, climbing, archery and team-building.
