Work on A22 finishes ahead of schedule

Gerhard Rink, project manager for Colas, with Cllr Carl Maynard, East Sussex County Council lead member for transport and environment, at the resurfaced A22 Golden Jubilee Way in EastbourneWORK on resurfacing a dual carriageway in Eastbourne is finishing more than three weeks ahead of schedule.

The A22 Golden Jubilee Way fully reopens at 4.30pm on Wednesday, May 21 2014 after the work was completed in half the seven-week period scheduled for the job.

East Sussex County Council said the work, carried out by its contractor, Colas, would mean the gleaming new road surface was expected to last for 10 years without the need for major repairs.

Cllr Carl Maynard, county council lead member for transport and environment, said: “Anyone driving along Golden Jubilee Way will be able to see what a huge difference the resurfacing has made.

“We appreciate the work has caused some inconvenience to motorists and we’d like to thank people for their patience.

“To have completed the work in half the scheduled time is a very positive result and I’d like to pay tribute to our contractors for completing the work so speedily and efficiently.”

The work on the A22 between its junctions with Dittons Road and Willingdon Drove, began at the end of last month, with the northbound and southbound carriageways resurfaced in turn.

The project is part of an investment by the council of more than £50 million to improve hundreds of roads across the county over the next two years.
