Boost for business thanks to Victoria Place rephasing

WORK on a major town centre redevelopment has been rephased to help traders make the most of the summer season.

Fencing has been removed from the Victoria Place section of Terminus Road in Eastbourne and the construction phasing has been adjusted to improve access to businesses in the town. Continue reading →

New project to keep war heroes’ memory alive

Recording Remembrance – Ernest Saunders, from Hailsham, died aged 31 in May 1917 and is buried at Etaples Military Cemetery, in northern France. His name is recorded on three memorials in Hailsham – on the town’s main First World War memorial, in High Street, and in plaques at the former Council Boys School and Parish Church. Recording Remembrance gives people the chance to create a permanent online record of war heroes’ lives by adding details and photographs of those whose names are engraved on memorials across the area. Continue reading →

Council backs ‘sensible budget for tough times’

A COUNCIL’S spending plans for the year ahead represent ‘a sensible approach in tough times’, a senior councillor has said. Cllr David Elkin, East Sussex County Council lead member for resources, was speaking after a meeting of the full council approved a budget which will see £18 million of savings made in the new financial year.

Trial pits will help shape town improvement scheme

Historic archive safeguarded for the future

Battle Abbey archives - Part of the grant by Henry VIII to Sir Anthony Browne of the dissolved Abbey of Battle and its lands in 1538, including a decorative letter H depicting the kingA TREASURE trove of documents relating to one of England’s most historic sites will stay in public ownership permanently.

The Battle Abbey Estate Archive has been allocated to East Sussex County Council to be preserved by the county’s record office, based at The Keep archive and resource centre. Continue reading →
